• Pretending to service your system. Some con artists may try to pose as a home security system technician from the company listed on your signs. They may tell you that they need to look over your system for functionality or to repair it. Instead, they are making your home security system less effective so they can break in later. Protect yourself and your home by calling your security company to confirm they did dispatch a technician.
• Getting you to switch systems. In a different kind of con, a sales agent may appear at your door and lie about how well your home security system works. They may also try to convince you that the company who provided your system is experiencing financial troubles. In a similar con, they may lie about being from your home security system company and try to get you to sign a new, more expensive contract. Again, your best bet is to call your company and report the suspicious activity.
• Selling you a system that doesn’t exist. There are also con artists out there who will try to sell you a contract for a home security system that doesn’t even exist. They may show up with fake signs and paperwork. Your best defense is always to call and check in on the company and make sure that they are a legitimate business.
